From Skeptic to Advocate: How CIT Changed Me

Written by: Chris Rinker, Chief of Police, New Market Police Department    In 2014, a conversation with a friend about police training introduced me to Crisis Intervention Training (CIT). He described it as a program designed to equip officers with the tools to respond effectively to individuals in crisis—and shared

Role of CIT in Building Community Trust

In my prior role as an Assistant Chief of Police for a mid-sized law enforcement agency, I conducted “kick-out” meetings with officers who successfully completed their field training program. During these meetings, I explained to newly sworn officers the importance of every interaction using the following metaphor: each successful, professional,

Stories of Impact

Making a difference one interaction at a time

De-escalation Guide

CIT improves community perceptions by equipping officers with de-escalation techniques and empathy-focused skills, demonstrating a commitment to safety and compassionate interactions.

By adopting and promoting CIT, law enforcement executives can solidify community trust, protect officers’ wellness, and enhance the overall perception of policing within the communities they serve.

– Jimmy Chapman, Executive Director of VA CIT

A New Approach to Crisis

When officers responded to a call about a distressed individual on a bridge, their CIT training made all the difference. Using de-escalation techniques and creating a connection through compassionate communication, officers were able to safely resolve the situation without force and connect the individual to mental health services.

The CIT training completely changed my approach. Instead of rushing in, I took time to build rapport and really listen. That made all the difference.

Breaking the Cycle

After multiple crisis responses for the same individual, a CIT-trained officer worked with community mental health services to develop a coordinated care plan. Six months later, the individual has had no further crisis calls and is successfully engaged in treatment.

Collaborative Solutions

When a rural community faced repeated crises involving veterans, their CIT program partnered with local VA services to develop specialized response protocols. The result: a 60% reduction in veteran-involved crisis calls and improved connections to appropriate services.

The collaboration between VA and local CIT has transformed how we serve veterans in crisis.

Youth Crisis Response

A specialized CIT-Youth program has trained officers to respond effectively to crisis situations involving adolescents. The program has led to a 45% increase in connecting youth to appropriate mental health services rather than juvenile detention.
